“In a statistical sense, we may one day communicate with each other far more via computer mediation than in direct interaction. The effects on what counts as ‘normal’ language acquisition could be similarly profound.” (Crystal, 2001: 241)
I have found that my students increasingly interact with one other via computer as compared to direct interaction. Since they and I are all becoming accustomed to communicating primarily via emails, texts, and blogs, I think that incoporating the use of this medium to have my students do the writing activities that I had them do before on paper could make the activities more appealing to them and allow their writing process to be much more dynamic by having other students respond to posts. Also, as our illustrious presenters mentioned, this could provide a record to track student progress throughout the semester, which is not typically the case with more traditional methods of submitting writing assignments. Blogging could be an excellent method for peer collaboration on writing with regard to both content and accuracy in the target language.
I am a fan and hope to incorporate blogging into my classes in the fall.
